Most modern irons are designed to maximize a specific performance benefit-- usually distance, forgiveness, or feel--while sacrificing the other critical areas necessary for accurate approach shots.

Callaway shifted the center of gravity 12 percent lower and 15 percent deeper in its Razr X irons. |
Enter Callaway's Razr X iron/hybrid set, a breakthrough in club design. Razr technology leads the industry into the next generation of iron play by combining the distance and forgiveness of wide-sole irons with the playability and turf interaction of thin-sole irons. It's the best of both worlds in a single club.
The secret to Razr technology is its innovative weight distribution. Callaway shifted the center of gravity 12 percent lower and 15 percent deeper in its Razr X irons by redistributing 30 grams of weight in the back cavity. The company then tailored a refined VFT face and high-definition undercut cavity to each individual iron. The result is more consistent ball speeds across the club face, increasing distance and accuracy even on mis-hits. In head-to-head tests, Razr X irons were 56 percent more accurate than traditional irons that chase distance at the cost of accuracy. Tighter shots. Shorter putts. Lower scores. The Razr X irons deliver uncompromised performance with every swing.

The Razr X hybrids feature a Zero Roll design that encourages a higher launch angle. |
The set also includes a pair of hybrids to replace the long irons that many golfers struggle to hit. The hybrids leverage Callaway's Zero Roll design to help golfers hit the ball higher and longer, even shots struck low on the face. This not only increases distance on the fairway or out of the rough, but it also produces softer landings--a must when approaching a green surrounded by hazards. Callaway also gave its standard Razr X hybrids a larger head size, making them more forgiving while generating shots that fly higher, longer, and straighter.
The Razr X hybrids offer other advantages as well. Like their sister irons, the hybrids feature Callaway's aggressive Variable Face Thickness technology, with precision shaping for each individual hybrid. This increases the size of the sweet spot while delivering hotter ball speeds and longer distances. Each standard Razr X club also has an offset hosel to help square the clubface at impact while providing a look at address that boosts confidence.
Callaway's Razr X irons were a 2011 Gold Medal/Editor's Choice pick in the game improvement category on
Golf Digest's Hot List, while the hybrids were a Gold Medal winner in the hybrid category. The iron/hybrid sets come in several configurations, including 3H, 4H, and 5-PW; 4H, 5H, and 6-SW; and 4H, 5H, and 6-AW. Golfers have their choice of graphite or steel shafts in several flexes.

They show up at your door and you're as excited as a kid on Christmas morning opening new presents. These sticks are so shiny and new that you almost can't bring yourself to ever let them get scuffed or dirty. So, you christen them at the driving range because that's a gingerly way to introduce them into your world (besides, you needed the practice anyhow...)
Well, that's what I did today with this set that I have been anxiously awaiting. I stopped playing a few weeks back because the old, borrowed set of clubs I had were killing my lower back as I had to contort my body in all sorts of ways to feel like I was addressing the ball correctly. Well, most of that went away today. Perhaps it was the confidence boost of new clubs, but these irons had such a natural feel to them that out of a bucket of 60 balls, I can honestly report there were only 2 shots that disappointed me (and that was entirely attributable to me -- not the clubs.)
So, take this review with a...Read more
